New experiences are interesting aren’t they. You can gain so much. You gain experience. Self confidence. A new perspective. A new way of thinking. Once you begin traveling, it’s hard to stop. It’s hard to settle into life in one place. It seems monotonous. It’s static.
When you travel, you are reliant on so many things. Yet nothing. A stranger who smiles at you becomes memorable in ways that you can’t explain; a moment that would go unnoticed in normal daily life.
I was speaking to a guy from Brussels the other day about the beauty of their architecture and he said “yes, although whoever really looks up.” He acknowledged the beauty of his city but made note that when you’re from there you take it for granted. You are on your phone. You’re rushing to work. You’re too busy living life to notice.
I suppose that’s the magic of a new place.
I keep asking myself how will I incorporate that idea into my daily life? By creating a routine of gratitude. Walking without distraction. Seeing the ocean as it’s the first time. I’m trying to note the lessons learned and ways to incorporate my experience when I’m back in one place.
Ideas that are brewing:
- Choose things you love and incorporate them into your daily life. In my case, when traveling, I love taking my time getting ready. It doesn’t happen everyday so when it does it feels special. A luxury.
- Start the morning with a hot tea and sit somewhere beautiful. Somewhere that’s peaceful. Allows you to think/process. Change it up if it gets stale.
- Read something that makes you smile. This can be on social media. Quotes on Pinterest. Listening to a Ted Talk or listening to a book.
- Keep in touch with those who matter. Whether you send a text, a post card or give them a ring — make time to connect.
- Take time to appreciate what’s around you. This is obviously easier said then done when into a normal routine with work and friends. But there was a say that someone smiled at me and it was so simple yet I was so grateful! I want to notice those moments every day.
- Enjoy the fresh air hitting your face. Go outside!
- Be grateful for the raindrops as they fall on your head.
- Smile at strangers.
- Talk to people around you.
- Listen to live music
- Do something that you’re passionate about and that brings you joy.
- Enjoy the cold or the heat. Whatever it is – enjoy it! Don’t let it get in the way of your happiness!
Needless to say, I’m excited for what’s to come!
My first step when Im home will be to buy a teapot and a juicer. My mornings will be filled with fresh squeezed orange juice and Earl Grey London Fog Tea with vanilla!
It really is the little things!
