Prepping for the Camino!

I’ve been wanting to hike the Camino de Santiago since I began my research for my trip to Spain over the summer! When in life do you actually have 6 weeks to do something like this? Well, looks like now is the time!

This morning I met with my new friend Ann who shared her experience of hiking the Camino! She hiked it a few years ago at the age of 66! Wow! #lifegoals

Well needless to say – she gave me several pieces of good advice!

  1. What you pack you will carry! Don’t overdue it.
  2. Bring walking sticks. The terrain is unpredictable. Walking sticks fold up and don’t take up much room but you’ll be happy to have them.
  3. Bring a plastic baggy for you phone and your Camino Passport.
  4. Bring dryfit clothes – two sets should do it. You need items that will dry over night.
  5. Bring several pairs of socks.
  6. Bring one pair of walking shoes and one pair of sandals. At the end of the day you will want shoes that will let your feet breath.
  7. Bring the rubber bandaids for blisters. Everyone’s feet are different but come prepared to take care of your feet!
  8. Bring a hat and sunscreen.
  9. Take your time! You will likely only do it once.  Enjoy it! Stop when you think something’s beautiful!
  10. Travel size shampoo, soap and toothpaste should do it. A little bit goes a long way.
  11. Bring cash as many of the small villages don’t take credit cards. The larger villages have ATMs if needed.
  12. Zip pants were wonderful because the days start off chilly and then it gets hot. The ability to shed layers is key.
  13. Take one water bottle. There are cafes every 3 miles or so. Snacks are unnecessary.
  14. Buy the Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago: St. Jean • Roncesvalles • Santiago. Aka the Camino Bible.
  15. Bring a light pancho in case it rains.
  16. Enjoy the journey! People are kind!

I’m so grateful to Ann for taking the time to keep with me! Her advice was succinct and thoughtful. I cannot wait to go!

Stay tuned for additional details as I prepare for my trip!
