I’ve been wanting to hike the Camino de Santiago since I began my research for my trip to Spain over the summer! When in life do you actually have 6 weeks to do something like this? Well, looks like now is the time!
This morning I met with my new friend Ann who shared her experience of hiking the Camino! She hiked it a few years ago at the age of 66! Wow! #lifegoals

Well needless to say – she gave me several pieces of good advice!
- What you pack you will carry! Don’t overdue it.
- Bring walking sticks. The terrain is unpredictable. Walking sticks fold up and don’t take up much room but you’ll be happy to have them.
- Bring a plastic baggy for you phone and your Camino Passport.
- Bring dryfit clothes – two sets should do it. You need items that will dry over night.
- Bring several pairs of socks.
- Bring one pair of walking shoes and one pair of sandals. At the end of the day you will want shoes that will let your feet breath.
- Bring the rubber bandaids for blisters. Everyone’s feet are different but come prepared to take care of your feet!
- Bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Take your time! You will likely only do it once. Enjoy it! Stop when you think something’s beautiful!
- Travel size shampoo, soap and toothpaste should do it. A little bit goes a long way.
- Bring cash as many of the small villages don’t take credit cards. The larger villages have ATMs if needed.
- Zip pants were wonderful because the days start off chilly and then it gets hot. The ability to shed layers is key.
- Take one water bottle. There are cafes every 3 miles or so. Snacks are unnecessary.
- Buy the Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago: St. Jean • Roncesvalles • Santiago. Aka the Camino Bible.
- Bring a light pancho in case it rains.
- Enjoy the journey! People are kind!
I’m so grateful to Ann for taking the time to keep with me! Her advice was succinct and thoughtful. I cannot wait to go!
Stay tuned for additional details as I prepare for my trip!
